I would like to know if it's possible for a female who has lost so much weight that she doesn't get her period anymore to become pregnant, and if so could she actually carry the child to term and give a healthy birth?

It might be, but with losing so much weight that your period stops, you might become infertile.

usually if you loose so much weight that you stop menstruating you also stop ovulating.....but NOT always. If you were to get pregnant the chances of having a healthy baby would not be good.
If you were to gain some weight and then became pregnant your chances are much better....but you have to continue to eat and gainweight throughout the entire pregnancy. You don't state how old you are, but one of the main causes of pre-term babies is underage moms. Being severely underweight will add greatly to that risk. If you're looking to see if you have to worry about birth control, I'd say yes....just in case. If you're trying to get pregnant but can't, go see your doc for help in gaining some healthy weight and then try again. What also concerns me is your question about being so severely underweight. This is not healthy and can cause problems that will stay with you for life. Why are you underweight? If it's not deliberate, maybe you should see a doc to find out why you're so thin. If you have an eating disorder, or this is deliberate weight loss, find help....or you could find yourself dead. Cindy (RN for over 27 yrs, Mom for over 21) |
